More Specific Gender Options

Greetings everyone! Today, I have a proposition, one that I'd like to be implemented onto the site. As you can see by my profile to the left, it says I am male. While my sex is most certainly male, I tend to identify far more with being a female. Personally, saying that I am of the gender male, I feel, does not actually describe what I am - more it feels like a label placed on me by society.

So, here's my suggestion with a question that follows...

I would very much like to see a few more gender options for people to choose from. Either that, or have the ability to withhold there gender from their public profile. I would suggest that people who wish to keep their gender to themselves not have any access to either gender's forum on the website if that fixes the "well, who's allowed where" problem. Furthermore, depending on what the individual identifies as should dictate which forum they're allowed into - Male to Female has access to the male forum, Female to Male has access to female (gender suggestions to follow.) There is already a forum for LGBT and one for open sexuality, mind / body questions, so I feel their isn't much need for these individuals to have access to a forum of their own. (please dispute this if you think otherwise!)

My suggestions for the new genders would be as follows, including explanations:

Trans-woman - Male to Female, like myself.
Trans-man - Female to Male
Withheld / any variation of the word - Someone who does not wish to disclose their gender.
(I am uncertain if this is a possible choice when signing up, but I don't think it is.)

If you have any to suggest, please say.

Now, the only thing I have to ask is: Would anyone else on the forum like to see this? Are there any others who feel the gender choices aren't as descriptive as they should be?

We could probably add something like this, but I do think you have the option to not display your gender.

Hmm, I can't see the option to do this. Where is it?

I am not trying to offend you, but if you have a penis you're a boy. That isn't a societal label that is anatomy.

There may be an acceptable sexuality identifier, but you're a boy.

I find that last comment a bit insensitive @TheInfamous. While she may technically be a boy (as in having male parts), that doesn't mean she is one or is required to identify with one. Who are we to tell her what she is and what she isn't? I don't have experience with this myself, but one of my closest friends is male-to-female transgender and I respect her wishes to be a woman because that's honestly what she feels like she is. I'm in full support of other gender options!

@Rinali, I think the option to not display your gender is in your personal settings on your profile.

For the life of me I can't seem to find it... unless I'm missing it completely. Ctrl+F for "gender" on every setting doesn't yield any results - might I be a pain and ask for specific directions? I've checked more than 5 times now, I can't seem to find it.

@TheInfamous - If it helps you understand, my sex is definitely male. But my gender is not. I feel more female than I do male. The label I was talking about was the fact I look like a boy, yet it seems to be socially bad to act like a female or dress as one. You didn't offend me - I'm quite aware that I'm of the male sex. I'm also aware I'm not of the male gender.

I like this idea.

Totally fine with this idea, it may and will of course prove useful.

The thing is, sometimes when asked for advice, the gender can often determine the approach to a solution or whatever else there is. With no gender, the advice can be directed towards the completely different gender, or be misinterpreted/misunderstood. And I'm not sure asking in a thread "So wait, are you a guy or a girl?" would be the best thing there is.

But where am I going with this ...

Of course, displaying numerous genders such as trans and homosexual, that's totally fine by me personally. A very nice addition to the forums! As to people not wanting to display their gender at all .. Refer to my statements above!

I want you to know that I am respecting your opinions totally, but I am pretty sure you're a gender male.

Rather, you might be mentally a female, physically (and isn't that gender? I think so) you are a male.

Re: More Specific Gender Options

There needs to be a distinction between gender and sex. Considering this confusion actually happens quite a lot. Gender in most people refers to the mental aspect. While sex refers to the actual physical aspect. Some people say that both are physical, which they aren't wrong, but gender happens to be the "nice" word for "sex." i suppose. So in this case, the mental aspect @Rinali is referring to is what he calls gender.
