Default 17 And No Highschool Education

Well, here's my situation:

When I was in 7th grade, my mom asked my if I wanted to be homeschooled. I told her I wanted to continue going to school, and a few days later she told me that after 8th grade that it would be her decision.

I started off doing ok, getting my work done, but I began to slack off. The next year ended up coming around and I hadn't completed any of my classes. This is now my third year, and I still haven't completed a single class, and honestly don't see myself getting any done before this school year.

I've had a hard time seeing a reason to do the work, I just can't seem to take taking my classes from my home seriously.

A friend of mine told me that you can go to highschool until you're 21, so I've considered going when I turn 18 this September, as my mom can't stop me since I'll be an adult (I understand that sounds cold, but my mom is controlling at times, and when she makes a decision there's no changing it).

I was told by another friend that if I can pass the GED tests, that I can go to college without going to highschool first.

Although I haven't finished any of my classes, I have spent most of my free-time programming. I've gotten fairly good at it over the last few years (I had just started taking an interest in it when I was in 8th), and I want to eventually go to college so that I can get better.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. What should I do?

Personally, I think you should try and complete high-school. Start again when the new school year comes around (I'm assuming thats September time for you). Because peoples plans change and ideas for what you want to do in the future, completing high-school will give you a strong foundation for whatever you want to do. You might decide in a few years that you don't want to go to college anymore and if that's the case, without completing high-school, you'll have nothing and it will be too late to do anything about it.

The fact that you've learnt a skill (programming) is really a very good thing and will certainly help you in the future but if that doesn't work out, you still need something to fall back on. A friend of mine did a fashion degree but then couldn't get any work in the fashion industry so ended up getting a job in the mall doing something she hated when with a different degree she could have gone into other industries if fashion didn't work out. You need to be able to have lots of cards that you can play whenever you need them and a high-school education is one of the most important. Without it, chances are people will gloss over you in favour of somebody else who did complete high-school.

Hope this helps.

Hope this helps.

I'm stuck in the same situation.
Now, take some advice from my mother:
"Get off the damn computer, start doing you work, or you get no graduation money and no privileges!"

Then do what I do. Cheat like all hell.
I don't know about you but my score key's are at my disposal... most of the time.
I'm in my last year of high school, by the way.
Homeschooling is tough, but you just gotta have the will to do it.

Now... get off the damn computer and do your work. =D

Oh, and, you really don't want a GED, my cousin got that and is now working 3 crap jobs - even though she's roughly 25 years old.

My half brother and sister are home educated. What they do is like one
hour of workand then like 15 minutes doing something else. The reason
only one hour and then a break is because scientists reckon a person
can only focus on one thing for an hour. They say that it really works
and they get lots of work done. The only downside of home education
is that it costs quite a bit of money !
