girl: Do you think I'm pretty? :3
boy: yes, you're attractive, BUT you have no comparisson to other girls who are way more beautifull
It doesn't seem like she asked you to be compared to other girls, did she?

Telling a girl that she is not as pretty or attractive as another girl to her face is not a smooth move at all. Like everyone above said, she must have felt embarrassed. Even if you truely felt that the other girl was more attractive, you keep your opinion to yourself.
I mean step in her shoes. You ask a guy. "How attractive am I?" And he says. "You're attractive, but not as attractive as her." Not only can that lower a girl's confidence, but that is just down right rude and mean.
And yes, us guys are supposed to flatter the ladies. Girls are more sensative than guys, and a few encouraging words can go a long way in their self-esteem and how they feel. But there maybe times when you have to tell her the truth, but please don't say anything about her looks unless they're positive.

As a guy myself Hell if I was compared to another guy and I actually found that guy was uglier than me or below me than I'd be mad but if I can understand why they would find the other guy more attractive than me then I wouldn't have gotten upset,cuz I mean there's ALWAYS someone better than you.
I had no idea that was such an insensitive comment from the girls point of view. Women....as mysterious and hard to comprehend as always...

Actually, I think its quite easy to comprehend a female's feeelings. I'm just surprised you're surprised it was an insensitive thing to say.
I don't know about other guys, but if I was compared to another male, I could honestly care less. I mean seriously, we're guys. Now girls its different, if you think about it. They are under a lot of pressure to look their best all the time. Honestly, I don't know how they can do it, must be natural beauty . Now sometimes for guys their looks may attract girls, but its more about what type of person they are on the inside. Now, I'm guilty on this as well. But guys go for looks over personality. So thats how saying that one girl is more attractive than another is wrong to say to a girl.

That's like slapping a girl in the face, really. It's saying she isn't as pretty as someone else, and that was uncalled for.
There was no reason to tack on that last part, saying "yes" would have sufficed.
People, in general, don't like to be compared to others. That's like saying something you did was good, but not good enough to be considered good.
Basically, you said she was uglier than the girl she was next to. Which, yeah, you did.
I mean, girls are concerned about how attractive they are in general as it is. She probably asked that because she wasn't feeling all that attractive, so that was like adding insult to injury.
Truth or not, it didn't have anything to do with what she asked you and you shouldn't have said it. She asked if she was attractive, not how attractive she was in comparison to the other chick.
Personally, I would have thrown a heavy object at your head. A lot of girls like to be told their pretty, not just pretty but - oh, no where near as pretty as this chick!
Think of it like this, it's almost like a guy being totally and utterly emasculated in front of a lot of people. It's being shown-up by competition and no one likes that, esp. females.

If I was in that situation, I would have cried, honestly. Girls are sensitive, full stop. Yeah, I know that guys go down hard when you bruise their ego, but girls can take things to a whole new level.
What you did was extremely uncalled for. She asked you if you thought she was pretty. Not if she was as pretty or prettier than the other girl. Wasn't meant to be competitive at all.
