try out making a sleeping playlist of just a few songs 10-20 max.
Include classical music (Pachabel in D# is a good one), try out some songs by Kevin McLeod (optional because they can be awakening if you choose the wrong ones) and Blackmill are quite good as well.

Also, if you just have them playing for a few nights and struggle to fall asleep, stick with it but change the songs. Don't change them every night.
But trust me, if you stick with a playlist, and you fall asleep to it (even if it takes 30 minutes) after a while (3-6 days) your brain takes the cue that it is sleeping time, and it will calm down with all the thoughts.

Trust me it works, I used to struggle to sleep (still do on a Sunday night ) but music really does help.

*my playlist*
Kevin McLeod - Cattails
Kevin McLeod - One Eyed Maestro
Blackmill - Evil Beauty
Blackmill - Oh Miah
Blackmill - Let It Be
Blackmill - Fortune Sou

(I have used these for about 2 months now, if I hear a few of these songs played back to back I will feel tired, even if it is midday)

I am getting good at video making, come and give me tips and show love on YouTube

This happens to me too!

I have insomnia and I will usually stay up until 3am and then I would have to get up for classes at 6am

It can be exhausting.

But I found out that if I excerise on a weekly basis I fall back into a normal sleep pattern. Excersise helps one release their energy in a positive way, it can be jogging, walking, yoga, anything really.

What I have learned though is that you should never just lay in bed and think about things knowing that you won't fall asleep. If you start having these thoughts then get up and do something that will take your mind off of it. As long as it is not watching tv or using the computer you will probably eventually become tired.

Good Luck

Music helps a lot, especially classical music. Also, try listening to violin, harp and piano music.

This music is one of my favs.

I can recommend a classical list if you want to, if you are into them.

For me though I can shut up my brain when it's time to sleep O_O I usually sleep when I am tired only tho. xD

Sounds and thoughts keep me up,too, so I just realax and consentrate on mu eyelids and think of a blank TV screen, if that doesn't help try shutting all noises off 30 min. before you go to bed, turn your lights down, and don't eat anything 20 min. before you sleep. Especially coke or anything with cafeine. Hope I helped!
