You know what the real problem is? I would argue that it's not sex. That's not the problem, if you want to call it that. It doesn't have much more appeal than it did to the last few generations. The "crisis" that we have is profligacy. The search for more and more pleasure (especially in America, although it is dissipating world wide now). We've decided to throw out all moderation and just do exactly what makes us happy and gives us the most pleasure here and now. While you can argue all the ethical implications you want about it, it has had a more negative effect than some would want to admit. This manifests itself in drugs, smoking, sex, and other behavior that may not be so good for our generation or society. So that's my thoughts on the whole thing. I don't think it's just sex. I think that's an indication of a much bigger trend. (Although, one could argue that profligacy is an essentially American trait. But I wouldn't).

^ That.
It isn't just sex, but it's a big part of it.
Hate to break it to you though but this has been going on for a long time now, it's not recent.
Society has always been obsessed with sex... and as soon as they put the movie rating system in place they started making more and more R-rated movies plus some X-rated ones (back in the 70's, when it was put in place mostly). But long before that society was obsessed with sex or anything about sex or anything remotely sexual.
More than anything it's the lack of self-restraint. Overindulgence in anything is bad for a single person, this also holds true for society.
It's like consuming nothing but junk food and never showing any restraint for it by perhaps eating something else instead.
We live in a society today that tells us what we do isn't wrong, not matter what it is really (except maybe murder or rape - but, hell, even people can argue on that), and that because of that we should just indulge. We're also taught not to be held accountable for our actions. Put those things together and you get an excuse for overindulgence.
If you want to argue it on a religious basis then examine the Seven Deadly Sins and you'll see they all have one thing in common. Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride, what do they all have in common? Excess, overindulgence, or taking something too far. All vices are minor in moderation, hell they can even be a good thing! But when you take it too far you become consumed with it.
Most people you'll run across don't take it far but more than likely they overindulge in something and there are always consequences and risks to overindulgence. Society, however, they've been overindulging since they found out Peg One goes into Hole A (if you catch my drift).
Because it's supposed to feel good, right? Who wouldn't want to feel good all the time? That's what society teaches us, basically. It's not just about sex, though it's usually either sex, drugs, or alcohol people choose. Sometimes it's violence. Sometimes it's thievery. Sometimes it's just as simple as being a bum.
Either way, it's all overindulgence.
Why? Not really sure. I guess once you accept one too many things, other people want in and it becomes a cycle from there. As an example only go back 60 years or so and people didn't accept homosexuality. Nowadays we do, but we can't fathom accepting other things. Regardless we believe people from then were no more than bigots. But 50 years from now we'll be the bigots for finding bestiality disgusting (pfft, hell, maybe not even that long - it's already happening!). Not that I'm comparing the two, mind you.
I'm saying it's a sexual revolution all the same. It may be a different sexual game but it'll be no different to people in the future to how accepting homosexuality is to us now.
And this was just an example really, it could be any number of things, not specifically those two.
My point to that is we're becoming more and more open of sexuality as a whole which can be both a good and a bad thing. On one hand it leads to understanding and acceptance but on the other hand it leads to radical overindulgence amongst society. And not just with the above topics, it's anything really. We're also becoming more open about drugs which is leading to acceptance of it's usage thus more people doing it.
This happens anytime society accepts something new. Like divorce. Used to, at least in America, they took longer to process and you had to have a good reason for getting one (like abuse, cheating, etc) rather than you just don't love each other anymore. So if you got married you made damn sure you knew who you were getting married to and wanted to marry them. After a divorce became easier to get people got the mindset of "if I don't like it, I'll just get a divorce" then once women were able to get half a mans money upon divorce even more marriages and divorces took place.
In other words people rushed into marriage and divorce rates skyrocketed.
So it's kinda like that. But there are any number of example of overindulgence, excess, lack of restraint, etc.
Either way it's all detrimental too society. Not that anyone can see that... because how can something that feels good be wrong, right? Heh...
Also what Cougar said. Impressive. Most people don't make that connection.
