Default Smoking?

Recently I found out that 2 of my best friends smoke and it shocked me because they are only 13 year old. I tried talking to them to stop but it ended up to an argument. One of them kept it a secret from me for 2 years. The other one started smoking because of family problems. She said that smoking made her feel better. But how does it make you feel better?

I think that's just an excuse personally. There's other ways to deal with things than something disgusting like smoking. 13 is far too young.

When i started smoking (age 11) my nan died. This was the first closest person to me to die. I was deverstated. I turned to smoking, and it's almost like a drug to realise pain. When you inhale it just calms you down and let's you wind down. But once you've smoked the first it's one after another and the more you smoke the more your addicted. and before you know it your hooked. But smoking is not the answer. It takes a second to start but a lifetime to quit. But then again it is down to your friends if they smoke or not. Maybe tell there parents?

RaeRae right 13 is to young and besides if they choose to get that horrible black stuff down them and make there lungs black then so be it. You can stop them today or tomorrow but if they still don't listen and care then say fine have it your way but don't say i didn't warn you.

Pretty much this.

Smoking does help you relax and relieve stress. The nicotine in cigarettes is a drug which can mildly and temporarily stop feelings of depression and anxiety. However it is very addictive and not something I'd ever encourage. Have you expressed your concern to them? Point out the benefits of quitting (send less money, less chance of lung cancer, appearing healthier etc.) and offer encouragement.

Edit: sorry i see you already said you've spoke to them and it didn't go well. Me not reading it properly. Well other than reminding them of the benefits of quitting like I said there's not a lot else you can do. You could tell there parents but I'd imagine they wouldn't be too pleased with you if you did that. Maybe suggest she speak to someone about her family problems as well if they're still on going?

Everyone's who has replied so far has pretty much given you the answer to your question, so I'm going to focus on another part of this situation (I hope you don't mind?).

It's nice to know you tried to talk them into stopping, and it's very unfortunate that you were unsuccessful. I think maybe you should keep trying and see if you can change their mind.

It may help them feel better now, but the long-term effects on their health (possibly finances) would certainly out-weight the problems they may be facing now. It's difficult, yes, but as a friend you need to be supportive and try and help them.

I don't smoke but if someone offers me one I'll have a drag. It just makes you feel good, like alcohol. Relaxes your mind and help you see a bit clearer.

But you're only 14..?

And the first part doesn't really make sense

Yes, I am 14. But I don't really think your age can stop you doing anything. Well, at least not around here.

What I meant was that I don't smoke daily or even weekly and I don't buy my own. But if I was at a party or something and someone offered me one, I might have some.
