I have a cut that's not very bad, it's about 2 inches long but it's deep enough that I could see the layer of fat that's under the skin. Every day I put ointment on it and sometimes bandage it and it will grow a scab and start looking better, but then every time I shower the cut splits open again.

Basically what I'm asking is should I try to keep it dry, and if so, how can I keep it dry when I shower? Also, should I use those butterfly stitches things to keep it closed?

For one thing, if you can see the subcutaneous fat, the cut is deep enough to require stitches.

For another thing, putting ointment on an open cut and sticking a bandage over it won't promote the healing process. Leave it open to the air.

Lastly, to keep it dry in the shower, tape part of a plastic bag over it.

OMG gurl!!! I had 14 stitches done but mine was on the front of my leg and you can see the subcutaneous fat too

How long have you had it? Might you be able to get a picture?
I have a lot of experience with with cuts and stuff and am studying to get into medical school, so I may be able to help.

Make sure that it doesn't get infected. That's one of the most important things. But also, at the same time, don't always keep it under a bandage or something like that. It also sounds like it may be deep enough to require stitches. You may want to seek out medical attention or something for it.

I'll take a picture sometime tonight. I haven't been keeping it under a bandage all the time, I've left it uncovered since I got it and only covered it today so it wouldn't rub against my shirt. I definitely don't want to deal with an infection, so that's why I'm consulting all of you lol

Voila. So it's a little less than 2 inches long and not wide at all. It doesn't even look that bad to me but I don't know much about cuts :p I'm just concerned because it won't stay closed when it gets wet.

oh okay, not as bad as you think. That's not the subcutaneous fat under your skin.
That's more or less your second layer of skin.

Does it hurt very much?
